Look Above: A 2025 New Year’s Reflection

“…do not fear, for I am with you; I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

I have always had a problem with heights. It’s not that I haven’t tried to overcome it, it’s just that my body can’t seem to handle the sensations that occur. Truthfully, it’s not so much the height itself, as the looking down from the height. My head and stomach rebel at the sensation of looking down.

I’ve been told many times, just to look straight ahead and resist the urge to lower my eyes. This is great in theory, I suppose, but then, human nature urges one to just take a quick peek – and the bodily response causes a feeling of panic!

As 2025 stands before us, there are many who feel that they are standing at the edge of a precipice. Some individuals can no longer watch the news, with wars, unrest, economic woes and political upheavals and uncertainties being broadcast, without that feeling of inner turmoil. On top of this, many are suffering personal hardships and losses, compounding the pressure. So, how do we calmly keep our eyes looking straight ahead? Maintaining a steady keel?

Jesus gently urges us, “ Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Let’s choose to look up more, into the face of our Saviour, so that it will be easier to look straight ahead without anxiety and fear. It may not change the circumstances around us, but it will certainly change us.

A happy and hope filled 2025, everyone!
